Do Nov 16, 2006 3:20 pm Hallo Everybody, I went to see my grandma on the weekend! She lives about 1 hour away from here by train and it was very nice to see her again since I hadn’t for 2 years! We didn’t really do a lot, just talking, eating, relaxing… Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |
Horrible afternoon… |
Sa Nov 04, 2006 10:33 am I had a horrible afternoon yesterday. I received my admission ticket for the SAT test, which was supposed to be this morning. There was a tiny note that I will need my passport to get onto the military base in Heidelberg where the test would take place. Well, until then I didn’t even know it was a military base and call me stupid, but I also didn’t know that you need a passport to enter such a base. Anyway, the problem was that my passport is in Bremen and I am in Karlsruhe (For all of you, who don’t know, that’s about 5 hours away by car, if there’s no traffic and no breaks.). I left it at my parents’ house, because, honestly, how often do you need your passport when you plan on staying in the EU??? Never. Right. Afterwards I helped the grandparents, who were there to take care of Hannah, to prepare dinner (or to say it in the way they do: tea). I put some potatoes and some water in a pot, put it on the stove AND then I added something absolutely horrible: salt. The grandma almost had a heart attack when she saw that and I had to listen for half an hour to the dangers of salt, especially for young children… The week itself was pretty nice. On Sunday I went to a fair with my friend Julia and we had fun walking around and mainly eating everything we saw. My grandma doesn’t live very far away and I will go and see her next weekend or the weekend after that. I haven’t seen her in about two years, so it’ll be nice. I’m not sure what to do today now. My friend has to work and I didn’t plan anything since I thought I’d have to take the test. Maybe I’ll go to the movies. Tomorrow I will meet a girl who was an AuPair in Manassas in 2001. She lived only a few miles away from where I did! I met her online and it’ll take me about 15minutes to get to her house from here. The world is small… I just had a call from my hostdad’s mother. She asked me if ‘Mr. McLean’ was at home – her son. Then she told me that she has a very important message for him. She wanted him to know that he has to plant the strawberry-plants she gave to him in triangles, 30cm apart from each other… Some people… Anyway, I will look at the movie times now, my friends Veronika and Suzi probably can’t believe I haven’t seen ‘The Guardian’ yet, so I guess I will do that today… Bye, Christina Geposted von: DeltaNu 1 Comments (Post your comment) |
Hallo again! |
Mo Okt 23, 2006 9:59 am Today’s Monday and I had a pretty nice weekend. On Friday I went out with a new friend. She lives down the street and we met online. I’m so glad I found her (or she found me), we get along really well. Anyway, we went out into a club and although that’s usually not my cup of tea, I really enjoyed it. It was my first time after a whole year in America that I’ve been to a club. I guess I have to learn how to flirt again… There was a cute guy that seemed to be interested, but somehow I didn’t manage to talk to him. Oh, well. On Sunday I went swimming and met the girl, Julia, again afterwards for dinner. Two people answered my online ad, they are both new in Karlsruhe and both have been in the US for a year! I thought that’s very funny. One of them even was in Manassas, which is really close to Fredericksburg, where I have been. The world is small… Last week I met another girl and we went to the movies. I liked her, she was very nice, but we haven’t talked to each other since then. We didn’t have too many things in common, though. But I think it would be nice to meet her occasionally. My hostdad is on a business trip now for a week and I’m alone with Hannah and my hostmum. Last week he was at home almost all the time and I had problems with Hannah, because she wanted him to put her to bed, wake her up etc. And I felt a little watched. Anyway. I also went on a playdate with a group of mothers and their children. They were all nice, but much older than I am and they didn’t treat me like I belonged there, maybe because I’m not a mother as well?! I don’t know. When I came to America, I sometimes used words that my hostmum didn’t understand and she told me they were wrong. I thought I might have made them up or they are not used in Virginia. Now my new hostmum, who is Scottish, tells me they were all right… just British. We only have British TV at the moment also. AND we have an American library in Karlsruhe, which I really love. I just got the TV Show ‘Pride and Prejudice’ with Colin Firth, I really like it! Since I’m talking English all the time, I still feel strange when I’m walking through the City, talking German with somebody, and knowing that everybody understands us. In America, my friends were mostly German speaking, but most of the people around didn’t understand us. I remember I almost told my friend there that the woman next to us looks like a man when this woman turned around and talked German to us… Okay, that’s all for now, gotta go and start working. My weekend. |
Mo Okt 09, 2006 9:51 am On Friday me and my hostmum watched ‘Bevond Silence’ in the evening and when my hostdad came later on, we drank some wine from his company and he ate Oreos for the first time. That was pretty nice. On Saturday I went into the city and had a look at all those shops there. I couldn’t really buy anything, because I have to save money for being able to study in the US, but I didn’t have anything else to do. I walked and walked to kill some time and when I came home, I started calling people that live in Bremen and the US to chat, but nobody was there. There was a festival closeby, but I don’t know anybody here yet and I didn’t want to go alone, so I felt pretty lonely that night. Finally, my last hostmum called me back and it was very nice to talk to her again. An envelope arrived on Saturday from the company I had applied to as an interviewer. It would be something I could do next to being an AuPair, because it’s not regularly and I can choose if and when I want to work. No taxes have to be paid for that kind of work, which is pretty good. They sent me test-interviews, gave me a starting address and I had to go there and try to win the people there for an interview. Well, the first person opened the door – it was a half-naked teenager – and was willing to do the interview, but his birthday wasn’t the next one from all the people in the household, so I had to come back at a time his dad would be there. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there yet whenever I tried. That teenager was the only person who opened the door at all, so I wasn’t very lucky yet. I hope it’s getting better, I’ll try again later. On Sunday I went swimming with my hostparents and I decided that swimming is a much better sport than jogging (well, It’s more likely that I’ll go swimming…), so I will probably buy a ticket for a whole month and go to the pool in the mornings. Then I was bored again, so I went to watch ‘Das Parfum’, which was absolutely great! I thought it would be horrible, just because it’s partly a German production – And honestly, how many German movies are good? 4??? – and it’s about odors, and I thought it’s almost impossible to make a movie out of that. But I was wrong, it’s a great movie and one of the few that can compete with international movies. And once again I was certain that this is exactly what I want to do in my life – direct movies! Now it’s Monday morning and I have a few errands to run. Bye, Christina Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |
Almost weekend! |
Fr Okt 06, 2006 9:27 am Today is Friday and that means: almost weekend! I don’t really have a lot to do today, my hostmum asked me to go grocery shopping and that’s pretty much it. She will pick up Hannah later and said they would go to the playpark then and I could join if I wanted to. I guess I don’t really have to work, because I ironed the parents’ clothes as well, not only Hannahs. Anyway. In America I went sightseeing and to museums many times with friends. We already made fun of that, because how many times did we do something like that in Germany??? I have been to a museum once in my life in Germany without being forced by teachers and for this one time I had won free tickets… And now guess what the first thing was that I really saw of Karlsruhe? I didn’t go shopping or dancing, no, I took the little girl to the natural history museum. I am not sure, is that a good or a bad thing??? I’m still learning for my SATs in November and I have to say, it’s not as hard as I thought. The book I bought at Borders (for $35!!!) is really great (it should be, for that money) and you almost never really have to know anything. You read a text and answer a question, you fill in the word that best fits into a sentence, you find out the author’s opinion and solve a few maths-problems. I’m not saying I’m not going to make any mistakes, because it’s so easy, but I thought it would be like the German Abitur and that I really have to sit down and learn. It’s more like a a puzzle or brain-teaser. Nothing else happened. I’m boring myself already. Bye, Christina PS: I have to quote something out of ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, because I just love that sentence and I read the book last week: EVERY STEP I HAVE TAKEN SINCE I WAS A CHILD IN GION, I HAVE TAKEN IN THE HOPE OF BRINGING MYSELF CLOSER TO YOU. Di Okt 03, 2006 8:25 pm I drove the car, die Ente, yesterday! It was funny, since everything’s so different and when turning somewhere I really felt as if it would just flip over, but it didn’t. I like cars that only few people have. Our visitors from Canada, Caroline and Erin, are gone now. They left yesterday morning. Hannah’s kindergarten was closed yesterday, so I had her the whole day. It was quite nice, she helped me make dinner and I let her try spices and we made some crafts and went outside for a little bit. The day went by pretty quickly and today I had almost nothing to do except for preparing dinner and ironing a little. I think she likes me and accepted me now pretty well. I guess I’m a little stricter than her parents. I raised my voice once and did not allow her to do something else later on. She looked at me a little surprised. I was happy to see that they’ve got American Oreos in a nearby supermarket! I could even by Campbell-soups that I used for cooking in America a lot, but they wanted almost 3€ for a small can… It’s not worth that much. My friend Barbara who spent the last year with me in the US will return to Austria in a few days. Some of the others will follow soon. I really miss being in Fredericksburg and I get tears in my eyes when I think of my little boys there who might forget me soon, since they are still so little. My last hostmum told me that they heard a noise out of my former bathroom there and the boys had said ‘Ninna?’. Logan later kissed a picture of me… Yeah, yeah, I went a long way from being ‘Ninna’ in the USA to being ‘Dadeena’ in Karlsruhe. I thought it would probably be very hard to get to know people here, but thanks to someone from this website, who is in D.C. now, but actually comes from Karlsruhe, I’m writing E-Mails with somebody close by! Thank you so much, Tamy!!! Maybe it’s not going to be a lonely year after all… Yesterday I got a message that said: ‘When you have time, could you iron my shirts? Please have them ready in the evening.’ It was in English and I asked Catriona, my new hostmum, if she had written that, but she said no. I was wondering who would write something like that, but I should have known straightaway: It was Larry, my last hostdad from Virginia, who tried to tease me, and well, he had me for a while! There’s nobody else with that kind of humor, next time I’ll be quicker! Nothing else to tell. Till next time, Christina Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |
WEEKEND |
Fr Sep 29, 2006 4:43 pm Today is Friday, that means there are only a few hours left until the weekend! I’m not sure about money, I hope I’ll get it weekly, otherwise it will be a bad weekend, since I’ve got exactly 2€ left… Hannah had two little accidents yesterday. She didn’t tell me she had to go to the toilet… I will drive the old car this weekend for the first time and she said I shall drive wherever on my own and try to find back. That’s probably the best way to get to know the area. Nothing else happened, I’ll take some pictures tomorrow. Christina Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |
First success! |
Do Sep 28, 2006 9:17 am Well, just a quick note. Yesterday I went to the kindergarten to pick up Hannah and she came and hugged me as soon as I was in the room! That was very cute. I know, it’s just a little success, but it made me happy. She also ate much more vegetables than she normally does, because I let her dip them in yoghurt. I think the Mum liked that. We have a guest from Canada here since yesterday and she brought her 9-months old baby with her. They are very nice. Today I will pick Hannah up all alone for the first time. The last few days the Mum and I always met and brought her home together. Hope it will be okay. Christina Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |
New hostfamily in Karlsruhe |
Di Sep 26, 2006 11:23 am I decided to write in English, so everybody (even Suzi…, just kidding) can read it. It was very hard to leave my little boys, may hostfamily and friends in the US. My time at home with my family was nice, but short. Since Sunday I’m with my new hostfamily now. On Sunday morning I got onto a train in Bremen with two huge suitcases, a backpack and my purse and I already started to wonder how on earth I was supposed to change trains 5 times with all that stuff. Fortunately, I had a weekend ticket that allows 5 people to take slow trains all over Germany for just €30, so a lot of people asked me if they could join me (train-tramping…). So there was always somebody grateful enough to carry my bags to the next train. My new hostparents, Catriona and Gerd, and their little girl Hannah (almost 3) picked me up at the train station in Karlsruhe at half past 8 in the evening and we went to their house by car. It’s pretty much in the middle of the city and they have a large garden and although not very tidy, they have a nice little ‘cottage’ here. My room is in the attic and the only thing that I don’t like about it is that there’s no door. You get up the stairs and you’re in the room. It’s pretty big (the whole floor consists of this room) and every furniture seems to be made by IKEA. I have so many wardrobes, boxes, shelves, etc. that I wonder if I will ever find my stuff again. There are two beds, three nice chairs to sit in and a desk. The only thing bad is that there is only one real bathroom for all of us. At the moment I pick up the girl from kindergarten with my hostmum around 4pm and then they show me places that Hannah likes and that we can go to after the first week. I will have a little car, eine Ente, for all those German speaking people among you. The kindergarten is about half an hour away by car and about 50 minutes away by bus. The girl is really cute, but yesterday I really missed my two little boys in the US. I guess I never really realised until then that I won’t be able to see them in a long time and that it is likely they’ve already forgotten me anyway. I will call them later. They were my little babies for a year, it’s hard to just leave. Nothing else to write down so far. Christina Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |
Rueckflugtickets |
Jippiehhh!!! Und Anfang November kommt der SAT… Fuer Tips bin ich immer dankbar! Geposted von: DeltaNu 0 Comments (Post your comment) |

In Maine. Bangor… |
