Okay, ich fang heute gleich mal an, mit dem haeufiger-ins-Diary-schreiben*gg*
Heute war bzw ist ja mal wieder mein freier Tag.
Endlich konnte ich mal wieder richtig ausschlafen! Um 11h hab ich mich dann bei Skype mit meinen Eltern getroffen und erst einmal bis um 12.30h gephont. Dann sind Anna und ich zusammen zum lunch gegangen. Natuerlich war “Crepevine”, wo wir eigtl essen wollten total ueberfuellt, also sind wir zum Mexikaner gegangen. Hmmm, lecker!
Um 14h hatte ich dann meine praktische Fahrpruefung. Ich war total nervoes, aber voellig umsosnst! Es war echt ein Kinderspiel! In ca 2-4 Wochen bekomm ich dann meine California State Driver’s License zugeschickt! Yay!

Okay, well, gtg…
Mary und ich fahrn gleich noch in die Hillsdale Shopping Mall!

Okay, ich wollte eigentlich schon vor – oh my gosh! – 6 Wochen posten, bin aber irgendwie nie dazu gekommen.
Ueber Labor Day war ich mit meiner Family in San Diego beim Bruder meiner Hostmom und dessen Familie. Es war sooo genial dort, v.a. da SD sowieso meine favourite US-Stadt ist…

Nun gut, die Wochen danach waren dann mehr oder weniger stressig. Erst war mein HD fuer ne Woche in Japan, dann sind Sonia und Leena Ende September endlich 2 geworden. An ihrem Geburtstag sind die Eltern meiner HM aus Florida eingeflogen. 2 Tage spaeter sind meine Hostparents fuer ne Woche nach Vegas, waehrend die Mary und ich (und die Grosseltern) daheim blieben, um die Kinder zu hueten. Natuerlich hat Sonia genau in dieser Woche beschlossen, dass sie keine Lust mehr auf Mittagsschlaf hat. Seitdem ist es ein Kunststueck sie zum Einschlafen zu bringen (und glaubt mir, ich habe alles versucht! ). Kaum waren meine Hostparents wieder da ist mein HD am naechsten Tag schon nach Europa geflogen (und wie gerne waere ich da mitgekommen, so wohl ich mich hier auch fuehle…)

Abends und in unserer Off-Zeit sind Mary und/oder ich immer mit Anna unterwegs, einem anderen Au Pair aus Dtl. Kino, Essengehen, Starbuck’s um die Ecke, Cold Stone, Movienight oder einfach nur TV schaun (” Is ‘House of Carters’ on tonight?” ), irgendwas machen wir immer.
Heute abend waren wir mit Tramy (noch ein anderes Au Pair) im Kino in San Mateo und haben “The Departed” angeschaut. HAMMERFILM!!! Den muss man echt gesehen haben! Einer der besten Filme seit langem (und ich hab in der letzten Zeit viele gute Filme gesehen… )

Was hier so wonderful ist, ist echt das Wetter. Es ist tagsueber an den meisten Tagen so heiss, dass man in kurzen Hosen bzw Rock und Top rumlaufen kann. Kaum zu glauben, dass in knapp 2 Monaten schon Weihnachten ist … Irgendwie irreal…

Hallo, ihr Lieben!
So sry, dass ich mich so lange nicht gemeldet hab… . Es sind ja inzwischen bestimmt schon 4 Wochen vergangen . Ich wusste ja schon immer, dass ich nicht gut im Tagebuchschreiben bin…
Ich werde jetzt wohl doch auf Deutsch schreiben, da soweit ich weiss nur deutschsprachige Verwandte und Freunde dieses Tagebuch bis jetzt lesen.

Also, was ist in den letzten 4 Wochen so alles passiert?!? Hmm, let’s see…

Marilo hatte Geburtstag und wir sind zur Feier des Tages mit Priya, unserer Hostmom, in die Pre-Broadway Vorstellung von “A chorus line” gegangen. Das Musical war sooooooo genial!
Anschliessend sind wir in das “Cheesecake Factory” in der obersten Etage vom Macy’s am Union Square gegangen und haben dort Dessert gegessen. Hmm, lecker cheesecake. Da gab es so viel Auswahl und cheesecake-Variationen (Oreo Cookie, Brownie, Chocolate, White Chocolate, Tiramisu, Strawberry, Cookie, und und und), die dann letztendlich nicht mehr nach cheesecake geschmeckt haben. Gut waren sie trotzdem:wink:.
Eine Woche spaeter, sind Mary und ich in das Musical “Rent” gegangen…und dieses Musical hat das erste noch uebertroffen!!!! Wow! Einfach nur genial!

Hmm, what else?
Ich war fuer ein Wochenende bei Greg und Nina, Bekannten von mir in Morgan Hill (bei San Jose) von einem vorherigen USA-Aufenthalt.
Am Freitag bin ich mit Nina ins Outlet Center nach Gilroy (hab ich schon mal erwaehnt, dass ich outlet malls liebe*gg*). Hab mir aber schoen brav nur ne neue Capri-Jeans gekauft. Dort bin ich auch das erste Mal durch ein Starbucks Drive-In gefahren*gg*.
Abends gab es dann lecker selbstgebackene original American Brownies mit Vanilla Ice Cream *yummy*…mmmmmmhhhhhhh!
Am Samstag sind dann Greg, Nina, Suzette (Nina’s Tochter) und ich nach Santana Row (ebenfalls bei San Jose)gefahren, wo wir ein bisschen spazieren sind. Santana Row ist ne relativ teure Einkaufsstrasse, die wie eine suedeuropaeische Einkaufsstrasse designed ist. Mit den Balkonen und Blumen und Restaurants, sieht es dort in etwa aus wie in Italien oder Suedfrankreich.

Vorletzte Woche war Priya dann von Mittwoch bis Montag in LA gewesen. Fuer Mary und mich hiess das: Ueberstunden schieben (gegen gute Bezahlung natuerlich*gg*)! Wir mussten abwechselnd entweder in der Frueh ne Stunde frueher oder am Abend ne Stunde laenger arbeiten. Auch Freitag, wenn ich normalerweise off bin, musste ich arbeiten, weil Atif, unser Hostdad ja in der Arbeit war. Am Freitag habe ich aber dann das Baby uebernommen, weil Taiya – so suess meine Twins auch sind und so sehr ich so liebe – einfach leichter zu handeln ist, allein schon, weil sie alle 2 Stunden ne nap macht. An diesem Samstag hatte ich dann zusaetzlich auch noch meine erste Spanischstunde am San Francisco City College (Gottseidank hatte ich den Samstag frei, am Sonntag hab ich dafuer dann den ganzen Tag gearbeitet). Ich war sooo nervoes, weil das ja meine erste Unterrichtsstunde ueberhaupt an einer Universitaet war. Da der Kurs von 9-12 Uhr frueh dauert, musste ich frueh aufstehen, um um 20 nach 7 mit dem Bus nach Millbrae an die BART-Station (die San Fran-Version einer S-Bahn) zu fahren. Der Kurs war aber super. Ich habe dort auch Amy, eine nette Indonesin kennengelernt, die aber schon seit 4 Jahren in San Francisco lebt. Wir sind dann gleich nach Kursende nach Downtown gefahren. Dort haben wir dann in Chinatown erst einmal billig Sushi gegessen, dann haben wir noch Dim Su gegessen. Billiger als Dim Su kann man nicht essen! Fuer nur einen Dollar bekommt man soooo viel! Allerdings wusste ich anfangs nicht, was ich da eigentlich esse:shock:… Auf dem Menue stand alles nur auf chinesisch (bis auf den Preis) und Amy hat auf chinesisch bestellt… Es war aber sehr lecker, auch wenn die ganze Aktion ein Erlebnis fuer sich war:D

Letzten Samstag habe ich mich nach meinem Collegekurs mit Mary in San Fran getroffen und wir sind erst einmal volle Power shoppen gegangen*gg*.
Am Sonntag mussten wir dann schon um 10.30 in San Francisco am Ferry Building in Embarcadero sein, weil wir dort ein Au Pair – Treffen mit Schnitzeljagd hatten. Ca 150 Au Pairs aus San Francisco und Umgebung waren da. Ich habe auch Krissi und Chris wiedergetroffen, die ich schon von der Au Pair School in New York bzw vorher kannte und die auf der anderen Seite der Bay wohnen. Um 11h ging dann unsere Scavenger Hunt durch San Francisco los. Wir mussten in 4er-Teams jede Menge Fragen beantworten und Gegenstaende zusammensuchen. Es war echt fun, aber auch mega-anstrengend. Das ganze hat dann um 13h am Ghirandelli Square gleich neben Fisherman’s Wharf geendet.
Mary und ich haben uns dann entschlossen nicht wie die meisten anderen gleich nach Hause zu fahren, sondern noch ein wenig Fisherman’s Wharf und Pier 39 und Umgebung zu erkunden und ein wenig vom super Wetter zu profitieren.
Anschliessend sind wir die Stockton Ave ueber Little Italy und Chinatown bis nach Downtown gefolgt und sind dann nach Hause gefahren, da wir um 20h ein meeting mit unseren Gasteltern hatten, aber nicht bevor wir uns einen Jamba Juice im Macy’s geholt haben.
Daheim angekommen war ich von den vergangenen 2 Tagen so muede, dass ich gleich ins Bett gefallen bin und erst einmal die Stunde bis zu unserem meeting geschlafen habe. Nach dem meeting hab ich mich dann gleich wieder hingelgt und habe bis zum naechsten morgen ohne Unterbrechung durchgschlafen.

Habe ich erwaehnt, dass wir naechstes Wochenende nach San Diego fahren?!? Es ist Labor Day Wochenende, einer der grossen Feiertage in Amerika. Wir fahren Freitag morgen los, eine Fahrt, die wegen dem Verkehr in Los Angeles mindestens 7 Std dauern wird….
In San Diego werden wir dann alle bei Priyas Bruder in Pacific Beach schlafen. Mary und ich hatten ueberlegt uns ein Hotelzimmer in Downtown San Diego zu nehmen, haben uns aber dagegen entschieden, weil uns das fuer eine Nacht zu teuer ist.
Aber hey, SAN DIEGO!!!! Meine Lieblingsstadt in den USA!*yipee* 3 Tage Sonne, Strand und Gaslamp Quarter:lol:

Ach ja, letzten Montag bin ich das erste Mal den grossen Van gefahren. Hoert sich komplizierter an, als es ist. Er faehrt sich eigentlich wie ein kleines Auto, man muss halt bloss auf die Breite aufpassen…. Somit bin ich meinem kalifornischen Fuehrerschein schon einen Schritt naeher gekommen *gg*

What else? Hmm, Leena and Sonia are great! Es ist echt amazing, wie sehr sie sich in den fast 2 Monaten, die ich schon hier bin, veraendert haben. Marilo und ich reden mit ihnen eigtl nur noch franzoesisch und sie verstehen eigentlich alles. Man merkt auch immer mehr, wie Mary und mein Einfluss auf sie abfaerbt. Sie sagen und tun immer mehr Sachen, die sie von uns haben. Echt funny!

Okay, ich hoffe ich hab nichts vergessen……
Ich werde jetzt mal versuchen, regelmaessiger zu schreiben. Das ist auch fuer mich einfacher, denke ich:wink:

Hi there!

It’s really time for a new entry!
I can’t believe it’s already been two weeks since I left! Time is really flying by. On the other hand, I’ve experienced so much in those two weeks it seems kinda longer to me, like to months.

It’s sooo great here. The family is so nice and the kids are really, really cute. I love my twins! And the little baby is such a cutie, always smiling and laughing.
There are so many moments you just wish for a camera…
After my year I’ll probably be fluent in baby English *lol*…I’m enlarging my vocabulary with great and useful words and expressions like “sleepy-sleepy”, “yummy-yummy” or “splash-splash”. I’m trying to teach them some French, though, too. It’s starting to work. They’re starting to understand sentences like “Tres bien” or “Viens ici”.

The weather here has been great. It’s hot (especially in the last couple of days) and the sun is shining all day long. Hopefully I’ll get a nice, golden tan here. You can sometimes see clouds hanging in some hills close-by. That’s where San Francisco is*gg*.
It’s been so incrtedibly hot today I stayed at home with the twins and didn’t take them to the park like I usually do. They just played in their play room and outside with their little bikes and their crayons. They had a lot of fun…

Marilo and me already went to the movies twice. First we went to see “Pirates of the Carribean 2″ (FUNNY MOVIE!!!!) and then a couple of days later we went to see “Superman returns” with an au pair friend.
Last friday, on my day off, I went shopping at the Hillsdale Shopping Center. On saturday, I went to San Francisco with Marilo. We had lots and lots of fun there. We’re probably going to spend a lot of weekends in that city.

Hi there!
My first entry from the US!
Leaving home was hard. There’s no other word for it. I went to the aiport with my parents and my younger brother and two of my friends met us there. We all had coffee together and talked a little until it was time to say goodbye.
I had tears in my eyes when I said goodbye but somehow I managed to keep them at bay. I still felt like I was in a dream and it wasn’t real.
Reality came crushing down on me hard and fast when I was sitting at the gate waiting on my flight, though. That’s when the tears started to flow and boy! They really did!

My stay at the Au Pair school was okay. I made many new friends I was sad to leave behind and our teacher was really great and really funny, but the food was aweful…

On friday, we went to NYC and it was sooooooo great!
We did a bus tour there and took the Statue Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. On the tour we also saw 5th Ave, Broadway, Time Square, Ground Zero, Madison Square Garden, Greenwich Village, and much much more… It was an amazing trip and we really had a LOT of fun!
I love New York!

Marilo and me arrived in the family last night. Everything’s really great here! The family’s really nice, the house is beautiful as is my room and the city is just great. I think I’m going to feel really at home here*gg*.

Okay, I gotta go.

Oh my goodness, the day has almost come!!!
At this time tomorrow, I’ll already be sitting in a plane, heading westward towards New York City.

Yesterday, me and my best friends had a DVD – night. We had a lot of fun and I savoured every moment of it, knowing I won’t be seeing most of them for a year. AHHHHH!

Today was spent packing the rest of my things in my suitcases, then weighing the suitcases, noticing they are too heavy and surpass the baggage limitations, thus unpacking or taking out a part of my things…. My mom and me spent hours packing those two suitcases, but now I (hopefully) won’t have any excessive baggage…*shrug*

Okay, well, I guess this is it! My next email will be from New York!

I know I am going to miss my family sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much and this is to my dutzels:
Ich hab euch soooooooooooooooooooooooooo doll lieb und werde euch soooooooooooooooooooooo sehr vermissen !!!!!! Danke für die süssen Abschiedsgeschenke, die kommen alle mit nach Amerika*gg*

Hey there!

Like I said, only nine days left!
Oh my gosh, time moves soo quickly…
I can’t believe my departure day is so close.
I’m still not really realizing I’m gonna be gone for an entire year, though. I’m feeling like I’m going away for a vacation and be back in a couple of weeks. It’s really strange, I know.

Of course, there are times everything is getting real and those times I’m feeling a mix of anticipation and excitement towards my year, but also sadness of leaving my family and friends behind in good ol’ Germany…

Also, I really should start packing because otherwise I might get a timing problem …

Okay, well gtg… I’m gonna write at least one other post before my departure. Until then – FEED ME!!! Leave comments, pretty pleeeeeeease! (No, I’m not needy at all )

Wow! I haven’t written in a REALLY long time:oops: … guess I’m not made for diary-writing … well, I hope I’m going to be faring better with that once I’m in the States.

Okay, of course, a lot has happened in a month(!)…
Foa, I finished my Abitur!*yay* It’s such a relief! I’m so happy It’s done, finally!*gg*

Then, I also went to Nürnberg to Rock im Park from the 2nd to the 5th June. Three days after that I flew to Spain to see my family there for the last time before my departure. I got back on monday. And on tuesday (yesterday), I took the train to Darmstadt where I stayed with my uncle and his family for a night. Then, this morning at 8am I had my appointment at the US Consulate in Frankfurt. When I arrived, there was already a line of people waiting in front of the consulate. But I was lucky – it turned out to be my turn quite soon. Even in the Consulate I didn’t have to wait for very long. And the personal visa interview that was supposed to be in English was held in German and was fairly easy. No big!
I stepped out of the consulate at 8.45am and then decided to get to know the city a little bit. When I am in Frankfurt, I might as well take advantage of it…
I strolled through the pedestrian precinct for a little while until it was time for me to get back to the station for my train to Munich at 12.20.
After 5 (!) hours on the train and 45 minutes of delay I finally arrived in Munich at 5pm.*sigh of release*

Oh, and btw: I got my flight information!!!

Sorry, dass ich mich so lang net gemeldet hab, ich war wegen dem Abi etwas busy…
Ich hoff dass legt sich in der nächsten Zeit mal wieder etwas…

I don’t remember: Did I tell you anything about my family? If not I will do this in my next entry…
Anyway, let me just tell you this: There will be two au pairs (me for the twins, the other for the baby). The other au pair is gonna be French and I am veeery happy about that*gg*. Hopefully I won’t forget all my French that way (for those of you who read that and don’t know: my mom’s French and I grew up bilingual)…
Plus Marie-Laurence (Marilo), the other au pair and I have written a couple of emails and we get along very well… It’s a perfect match. I sense this will be a VEEEEERY fun year!*gg*

Hi!

Okay, foa, I’d like to thank Julia for getting me this diary. I meant to thank her in the end of my last entry but then forgot … so: THANK YOU!!!!!!!

So, I thought I’m gonna start explaining a few things now.
I first had the idea of being an Aupair in the USA a looong time ago when I was younger (maybe 13?).
Over the years I changed my mind and decided to run for a summer Aupair in the USA as it would be better to start studying at university as soon as possible. I sent in my application at InterExchange and registered at Greataupair.com.
But then, I changed my mind again. I was afraid I would regret not having gone to the US for a year as an Aupair when I still could. You get a J1-visa for Aupair only once in your life, after all.
Not even a week after I changed my mind, my future hostmom contacted me. After only a few mails we noticed we had a lot in common. They are with Cultural Care, though, so I decided to change organisation.
I loved this family right away, there was only one thing bothered me in the beginning: There would be two Aupairs, one for the twins (me) and one for the baby.
After having thought about it for a while I came to terms with the idea. The advantages of such an arrangement outweighed the disadvantages by far, come to think of it. You have a friend who is always there, you have someone who can jump in for you if it is needed, you have less working-hours, you have someone you can talk to when you are homesick,etc.

I decided to go for it. We had a phone interview and it went very well. It took me some weeks to get everything done and send the application in, but I finally did it two weeks ago and we matched a couple of days ago. *yay*

Well, that’s it, for now…
I hope I’m not boring you to death with all this backstory here.

Hi!

Wow, I finally got a diary!

For those who don’t know me:
My name is Nat, I’m 19 years old and from near Munich.
I decided to write this diary in English as otherwise I’d have to write it in 3 different languages (German, French and English). I settled on English because it is (or supposed to be;) ) a universal language.*gg* There might be an entry solely in German or French from time to time but otherwise I’ll write in English. Feel free to leave a comment in whatever language you’re comfortable with.

Come July 2006 I’m going to be living near San Francisco. I found a perfect family there with twin girls (1.5 years) and a little baby girl (5 months when I arrive). There will be a second Aupair for the baby though, so my main task is taking care of the twins. They are sooo cute!
We officially matched a couple of days ago.
I got a date for my visa-interview today. I’ll have to go to Frankfurt on June 14th at 8am. (Will anybody else be there, too, on that day?)

What else? … My departure date is 4th July (Independence Day!) from Munich. Is anybody else flying to New York on that date? It’d be cool to be with someone on the plane…
